How to Use Setting Spray for Long-Lasting Makeup

Setting Spray for Long-Lasting Makeup: When used properly, Setting Spray is an effective way to make sure your make-up stays in good condition for a long time. Setting spray will keep all of your make-up (foundation, blush, and eye make-up) in place when it’s hot outside, travelling, or having long events. Even though many people use setting sprays, many do not apply them correctly; if you follow these tips, you can easily extend the longevity of your make-up.

  1. Shake Before You Use It: Before using your setting spray, shake the bottle to evenly combine the ingredients so that when you spray it, all ingredients are distributed evenly over your face.
  2. Keep Your Bottle Far Enough Away: Make sure to spray setting spray from at least 8–10 inches away from your face. If you get too close when spraying, the spray will saturate your skin, causing your make-up to smear or move. Spraying at an appropriate distance allows for an even application of mist across your face in a light shimmer.
  3. Spray in an “X” and “T” Pattern: When using setting spray, close your eyes and spray in two different directions.
First, spray in an X across your face, and then spray a straight T across your face. This way, all areas of your face are covered with the setting spray, and there will not be any sections that are too heavy from over-application of the spray.
  4. Allow Your Spray to Dry Naturally: Once you have used the setting spray to spray your face, leave your face alone until the mist has completely dried before you touch your face; this will help to hold your make-up in place longer. When you touch your face, you could leave a patch or a line on your skin from the setting spray.
  5. Utilizing a Setting Spray Between Makeup Layers (Optional): If you wish to extend the length of time your makeup lasts, apply a setting spray as part of the steps in your makeup application process.
Example: after applying foundation to your face, spray the product; after you have completed all of your makeup application, spray again; doing this will help the makeup remain intact during long days, special events or travels.
  6. How to Select a Setting Spray for You (Skin Type): Select a setting spray according to your skin type; for example:
  • Oily Skin: using a matte finish setting spray will reduce the amount of shine you may experience throughout the day.
  • Dry Skin: using a hydrating setting spray will provide you with a soft, hydrated feel throughout the day.
  • Combination Skin: using a balanced setting spray will allow both dry areas of your skin to stay hydrated and oily areas to remain balanced.
  1. Should You Want, Carry a Small Bottle for During the Day Touch Ups: For those who are out for an extended period of time, consider keeping a small bottle of setting spray with you to refresh your makeup periodically throughout the day. A light spray or two with the small bottle will refresh your face without adding the weight of a second application of the setting spray.
