Essential Tips to Protect Your Hair While Traveling
Protect Hair While Traveling: The experience of traveling opens up opportunities for adventure and discovering new places. However, traveling can be a nightmare for your hair. Changes in climate, ocean breeze, and water quality in hotels can all wreak havoc on your hair. If you’ve come home from vacation before only to find straw-like hair, this is a common problem.
To avoid needing to go to a salon after your trip for a “rescue cut,” here are some suggestions from a professional on how to take care of your hair while traveling.
- Don’t Use Hotel Products: Most hotels provide people with shampoo/conditioner. You can definitely save space when packing, but most hotel shampoos/conditioners are not the best option because they only contain harsh surfactants and their formula usually has little consistency. It is best to pack your own shampoo/conditioner so that even if the weather or environment is different from what you’re used to, you can still maintain the same healthy, clean appearance of your hair.
- Recipe for Rinsing Hair after Beach/ Ocean: Ocean water is great for creating “beach waves,” however, the other side of the coin is that ocean water is very dehydrating. Salt is a dehydrating agent that will remove moisture from your hair shaft. When you get out of the ocean, always rinse your hair completely with fresh, cold water. If you do not have time to wash your hair after swimming in the ocean, wetting your hair with fresh water before getting into the ocean will help to reduce the amount of salt that will be absorbed into your hair.
- Embrace Natural Oils: Use natural oils to hydrate and protect your scalp in a new environment; but don’t wash your hair every day because daily washing removes the natural layer of oil that protects your hair from damaging effects of the sun and humidity.
- Prioritize “Flash” Treatments: With a one-minute deep conditioning treatment, you can keep your hair looking fabulous without spending hours in a spa or bringing more luggage than necessary. Use a deep conditioning on your hair during your shower once/twice each week to restore the moisture lost due to the elements so you can enjoy sightseeing at the same time!
- Smart Packing: Skip the “Travel Size” Trap: Unless you’re flying with just a carry-on, forget those tiny, overpriced travel bottles. They barely last three days, and then you’re stuck hunting for shampoo in a language you don’t understand. Just pour your favorite products into a few reusable 100ml silicone bottles and toss them in your bag.
- Tame the Frizz with Oil: Humidity and dry heat love to mess with your hair, leaving it frizzy and wild. A light hair oil or serum—think Moroccan or Argan oil—can make all the difference. Run a bit through the ends to lock in moisture and give your hair that healthy shine.Note for blondes: Stick to clear oils so you don’t accidentally tint your hair yellow.
- Air-Dry Whenever Possible: Travel puts your hair through a lot: sun, weird water, endless styling. Give it a break. Skip the blow dryer and straightener whenever you can. Work in some leave-in conditioner and just let your hair air-dry. Save the heat tools for one or two special nights, not every day.
- Physical Protection: Hats and SPF: The sun does more than burn your skin—it can fry your hair and fade your color fast. The Hat: Nothing beats a good hat for blocking UV rays. Hair SPF: Not a hat person? No problem. Grab a hair sunscreen or UV spray. These protect your hair cuticle from the sun without leaving it greasy.
Travel hair care boils down to protection and moisture. Pack smart, skip the heat when you can, and you’ll look just as good as the places you’re visiting.
